Ministries and Programs at Holy Cross Episcopal Church

What We Do

Our mission is to live according to Christ's two primary commands:
Love God, and Love all people,

including yourself.

House Build

Each summer we head to San Diego, then cross the border and build a house in a day.
Then, we return to enjoy a delicious, home-cooked meal prepared by Rev. Jeff's partner Gwyneth and several parishioners.

Castro Valley Pride

Each year we join in Castro Valley's Pride celebration. Begun by students at CV High and now going 15 years strong, we share the love that is the basis of Holy Cross: God loves you. No exceptions.

Our Community Food Pantry by our Labyrinth

As food insecurity increases, we are grateful that our food pantry is a place where those who may need some extra groceries to make meals work can get non-perishables.

Here are some Key Ministries and their descriptions:

FESCO (Family Emergency Shelter Coalition)
The Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) was organized for the purpose of providing services to homeless and very low income families in Alameda County. FESCO’s mission is: helping homeless families move toward self-sufficiency by instilling or restoring dignity, self-esteem, and self-reliance so that families, their individual members, and the community are strengthened. FESCO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, governed by a Coalition of area churches and community members, including Holy Cross.

Community Cupboard
Begun during the Pandemic, our community cupboard offers free food items to those in need.  The cupboard is open 24/7 and is restocked at least twice a week with donations supplied by our congregation and local community.

Healing Ministry
We offer healing prayer at the side of the church during both Sunday services. These lay ministers anoint, lay hands on, and pray for those who seek healing of body, mind, or spirit. The team meets for sharing and prayer on the second Sunday of the month at 11:45 AM.

Outreach Market
Holy Cross hosts a monthly Outreach Market featuring a bake sale, usually on the first Sunday of the month. The proceeds fund various established outreach Programs.

Altar Guild
This team prepares and cares for the place where God's people worship. The Altar Guild works with the rector to plan for this vital ministry.

Vestry
This is the governing team of the parish. Our vestry has 9 elected members, each elected to a 3-year term. Terms are staggered so we elect three new members each year. The Rector, Clerk and the parish Treasurer are standing members of the Vestry.

In His Hands
In His Hands is a spiritual study group formed in 1995 to discuss the book we are reading together out loud, to share thoughts and lives to build community and to grow spiritually. The group meets weekly on Monday evening beginning at 7:00 (see Parish Calendar) and is open to anyone. We always have a spare book and no one is required to read aloud.

Memorial Garden
The Memorial Garden Committee established and maintains the Memorial Garden as a quiet, serene place to sit, pray, and reflect along side the columbarium where ashes of departed parish members rest.
